The County Theater is a wonderful community focal point. It is a cooperative theater encouraging people to become members, and possibly work a few hours a month to give access to the films which are frequently independent and art films as well as some first-run “hits”. Hargrave House has a limited number of free passes to the movies should you have the time and inclination to attend.

Shopping: There are a great variety of small independent shops as well as a few national brand shops in downtown Doylestown making shopping an interesting experience great for gift-finding. Some of the shops we suggest include the following:

• Galleries and Gift Shops – There are several excellent art galleries and gift shops within the central part of Doylestown, and others a short drive away. Some of our favorites include:

o A Special Gift, 30 E. State St., Phone: 215-340-0434

o The Paper Unicorn at 2 S. Main St., (215) 345-8655

o F.X. Dougherty Home & Gift at 64 S. Main St. Phone: 215-345-7541

o Chapman Galleries at46 E. State St., Phone: 215-348-2011

o David Frame Shop at 8 East Court St., Phone: 215-345-1705

• Book Shops

Doylestown boasts both a large independent retail bookshop, the Doylestown Bookshop on Main Street, and an independent children’s bookshop, Booktenders on Donaldson Street. There is also an excellent Comic Book store, Cyborg, next to Booktenders, and a Used Book shop on State Street.

• Jewelry – Wild and wonderful variations in jewelry abound in our many independent jewelry shops. From diamond rings to country-chic, it’s all here.

• Apparel, Fashion, Fabrics – Again variety and small intimate shops are mixed with larger name stores in the downtown Doylestown area.

We’ve a tour of restaurants in Doylestown from fine French cuisine through Thailand, Latin America, Japan and back to steaks, barbeques and burgers. Bobby Simone’s – Under a block away set in a tiny walkway off State Street is this restaurant and patio bar with creative yet informal cuisine, exceptional beer and wines, and friendly attentive service in a comfortable atmosphere. 52 E. State Street, Phone: 215-340-1414,

Domani Star – Up Main Street to State St., then left on State and down 1 1/2 blocks on the right. Our own New York Italian restaurant. Sure it’s a bit crowded – and always busy – but the home cooked food is gerat! Enjoy! BYOB 57 W. State St, Phone 215-230-9100,
