Time to Enjoy the Fruits (and Veggies) of the Harvest

We’ve always been fans of fresh-from-the-garden fruits and vegetables. How can you not be when they taste so good? So we’re thrilled that Saturday marks the season opening of the Doylestown Farmers’ Market right around the corner from us on South Hamilton Street.

The market, sponsored by Buckingham Township Civic Association, is celebrating its 38th year. Bucks County is home to some wonderful farms just down the road from us. Your friendly vendors sell a variety of products. How about some homemade granola or grass-fed Angus beef? Take home some of the all-natural scented soaps or a lovely, fragrant bouquet of fresh-cut flowers (that in itself will win you points with your honey!) You can get a whole list of what you can purchase on the BTCA website.

The market opens at 7 a.m. each Saturday and closes at noon. The last day of the season is the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Enjoy!

If you’re at all familiar with Doylestown, you know we’ve got some darn good restaurants in here town. Here’s your chance to get to know some of the ones you’re not familiar with. Starting today and running through April 21 is Doylestown Restaurant Week. More than 25 restaurants – from Indian cuisine to offerings at a new raw juice bar – are participating. They’re going to have some special menu items and discounted prices. So, let’s eat!

Get Ready to Lace Up Those Sneakers!

Only a couple of weeks left until we leave winter behind and enter a new season. We’re already seeing signs of spring: We’ve got some snowdrops blooming out back and the days have been getting warmer and longer. Hurray!

We bet you’ll start seeing more people outside. Here’s something that’ll get you motivated. Each Wednesday – from March 20 to June 5 – explore some of Doylestown’s neighborhoods and its parks through the Spring Scenic Stroll, coordinated by Doylestown Borough Park and Recreation Board. There’s a whole list of places they’ve got picked out for a fun walking tour.

They take place during the morning hours – 10 a.m. during March and April, then 9 a.m. during May and June. It’s a great way to meet some new people, learn about Doylestown and get some exercise all at the same time!

OK, we admit it. We like celebrity news as much as anyone else. So, saying that, we were just tickled to find out that a member of world royalty is expected to come to our town later this fall.

Michener Art Museum will host an exhibit featuring images and artifacts of the late screen legend and Philadelphia native Grace Kelly. The beautiful blonde retired from Hollywood to become a real-life princess when she married Rainier III, Prince of Monaco. Here’s the celebrity part: Her son, Prince Albert, will attend the opening (trumpet fanfare!)

“From Philadelphia to Monaco: Grace Kelly, an American Icon” runs from Oct. 31, 2013, through Jan. 26, 2014. The Michener is the first American venue for this interactive exhibition and is based on a display at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.

The museum, which has a well-established collection of works by Bucks County artists, scored a coup last year when it was one of only a select few museums chosen to exhibit pieces by Renaissance artists from the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy. From artists of the royals to modern-day royal appearances …

Winter Deals at Hargrave House

Our last blog entry told you about some fun things you can do around town during the upcoming cold-weather months. We thought we’d provide a little bit more incentive for you to check out us out as well!

Beat the Winter Doldrums!

With the holidays behind us and a new year just wide open with possibilities, why not make Doylestown a stop on your travel agenda? The winter “blahs” can easily set in during January and February, so we say head them off with a weekend stay at Hargrave House. Just steps away are a number of cute shops and restaurants that will help you while away your day. Area museums have lots of interesting exhibits. At Mercer Museum, you still have until Jan. 13 to catch the popular “Apron Chronicles,” a collection of vintage aprons, photos and personal narratives of those who wear them. Opening Jan. 19 through April 28 at Michener Art Museum is “The Mind’s Eye: 50 Years of Photography by Jerry Uelsmann,” which includes pieces ranging from real to imaginary. The Bucks County Civil War Library Museum is a hidden gem open midday on Saturdays. A visit there is a must for any Civil War buff. After your full day, come back to HH for some rest and relaxation. Bravo to Domani Star for its Culinary Prowess!

We’ve long known that Doylestown has some of the finest restaurants in the region. We’ve had guests come to stay with us specifically so they could go to dinner at some of them. Well, one of the recent blog posts on the Zagat website – you know, the famed restaurant reviewers? – confirmed our opinions. Domani Star on West State Street was listed as one of the top 10 best Italian restaurants in the Philadelphia area. Readers of the blog voted in a survey, with one of the diners calling Domani Star’s meatballs “to die for.” Here’s a link to the DoylestownPatch story, which also links to the Zagat blog. Fall Into Doylestown

The crisp morning air, the waning daylight hours and the subtle shift of leaves from green to a faded tone all point to one thing: Fall fast approaches.

Our shopkeepers have joined in, promoting the change of seasons with the wares they offer, too. Take a gander at some of the store windows or stop in at any of Doylestown’s eateries and you’ll step firmly into autumn as well.
Paint N’ Pottery on West Oakland Avenue offers some wonderful dishware, lovingly crafted by you. Turn your handprint into a spooky cat plate for Halloween or a chubby Thanksgiving turkey – functional yet personal. With a chill in the air, you may want to trade in your shorts for a pair of jeans. Monkey’s Uncle on East State Street sports a variety of hoodies suited for the kids. For mom, Lilies of the Field at State and Main offers quite a few chic wraps to ward off the cold. And lest we forget about food and drink (we never do!), stop by Pennsylvania Soup & Seafood House on South Main Street for a taste of their scrumptious and filling Butternut Squash Soup. And check out Chambers 19 Bistro & Bar’s fall drink specials, including Caramel Apple Martinis.

Cultural Loop Bus Starts up in September, with Stops at Doylestown Attractions

Doylestown is a great walk-able town. With all the shops, restaurants and museums we have, your tootsies can get quite a workout. But thanks to a new form of town-based public transportation that’s starting up in mid-September, you can give your feet a rest when needed and still visit the sites you want to see.
A “cultural loop” bus is set to shuttle visitors to some of the town’s favorite destinations – from Mercer and Michener museums in the South part of Doylestown to Henry Mercer’s castle-like home, Fonthill, on the outskirts of town. (For a full list, click on the above link.)
It’s scheduled to start during the weekend of the Doylestown Arts Festival, Sept. 15, and continue weekends through Oct. 28. Service then will resume next spring. It’ll be free (best part!) and pick-ups at all the locations will be every 20 minutes. At this point, hours will be 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays.
The Cultural Loop stop closest to Hargrave House will be at the County Theater on East State Street. Even if you’re not tired, it’s still a great way to do a little sightseeing and continue to discover Doylestown’s charm.
